The exact causes of acne is unknown, however, scientists do have an idea of how it is formed. Overactive sebaceous glands cause excessive sebum production, this coupled with blocked pores that prevents sebum, bacteria and white blood cells from escaping, forms acne. The mystery over here is that no one knows why the pores gets blocked.

Excessive sebum, bacteria, and inflammation, these are all the directly involve factors that lead to acne. There are many other important factors that can cause acne, it can range from stress, diet to lifestyle and many others.

Firstly, excessive sebum production is due to overactive sebaceous glands, and this is due to hormonal imbalance. Androgen, the males sex hormones that is found in both male and female, facilitates the sebaceous glands. Hormonal imbalance would cause sebaceous glands to produce more sebum than usual. More sebum produce means that there is a higher probability of sebum blockage. Pores that are blocked with sebum will form comedones, which is blackheads and whiteheads.

So this is where the bacteria, P.acnes(the bacteria found to cause inflammation in acne), comes in. P.acnes is a harmless bacteria that is lives on your skin, ONLY WHEN there is no ideal environment for them to multiply.

The presence of sebum provides an ideal habitat for P.acnes to grow. P.acnes feed on the sebum and dissolve sebum into substance that will irritates your skin. They also produce substances that will cause redness and skin irritation. All this will cause inflammation, which provides the route for comedones to move on to the more harmful pimple or even cystic acne.

I’ll stop here, let’s leave the ”hunt for the acne cause” to the scientist, theory on the acne cause can be quite complicated and boring. Knowing how to treat acne is a bigger concern for you.
